Videos, Courses, and Podcasts

Homeschool with Confidence: – This website is run by a veteran homeschooler, who is now a homeschool speaker and consultant. The site boasts many articles, and a free, 1-hour crash course on homeschooling. There is also a more in-depth, paid course, and a support community.

Vicki has also authored Home Education 101, a mentoring course, which has been helping new homeschooling families for over 15 years, by pairing them with veteran mentors. You may want to see if this is a program your local groups offer.

Homeschool 101: Introduction to Home Education: This video workshop is about 1 hour and 45 minutes in length.

Curriculum

There are far too many options for me to cover them all here – or for anyone to produce an exhaustive list. I do have a few product reviews though, as well as a big list of places to buy curriculum, and I’m working on a list of some free resources.

Cathy Duffy is one of the best sites for more reviews of homeschooling curriculums, and Homeschool Review Crew also has many, with each item or program reviewed by dozens of homeschoolers.

Homeschooling Methods

There are many different educational philosophies (unit studies, traditional, Charlotte Mason, etc.) and the majority of homeschoolers will incorporate a blend of several different ones. Sara Jones of HSLDA has an article that briefly describes each of the main educational methods, and also links to a quiz so you can help narrow down what your preference may be. There are other quizzes available as well, so I’ll link up to several, starting with the one in the aforementioned article, in case you are only interested in the quiz.

Planning & Recordkeeping

The information you need to record will vary based on personal preference and your state’s requirements. Be sure to look into the laws in your state so you know what you’re required to track.
