Musik at Home is a gentle introduction to music for early elementary kids and younger. Lessons in this program are designed for various age ranges:

  • Babies and Toddlers (0-24 months)
  • Mixed Ages (1-5)
  • Preschoolers (3-5)
  • Family Music (4-7)

Each class is under 30 minutes, with shorter lessons for younger children and longer ones for older kids. Through this program, children will be exposed to rhythm, poetry, musical notation and composition, major and minor tonalities, basic creative movement, and more.

We received a 3-month Musik at Home Membership through the Homeschool Review Crew.

What’s Involved?

As expected, classes include hand motions, singing, echoing, and some simple whole-body movements such as marching and jumping. There are also additional activities in many of the lessons. Some of these include using shakers, scarves, or rhythm sticks. Some activities have optional printed materials that you can purchase (flashcards, pictures, etc.), but you can also follow along with the teacher without those extras. Other activities just require paper and crayons.

If you can set aside a basket with paper, crayons, shakers, rhythm sticks, and scarves, that’s all the prep you’ll need for each class. You can use homemade shakers, and substitute wooden spoons or even colored pencils for the rhythm sticks.

This program is designed for a parent (or other caregiver) to do alongside their children, both for guidance and bonding.

Even for Babies?

The program does include videos for babies, and although they might be fun as a bonus if you’re already using the program with older children, I wouldn’t personally pay for this if I only had a baby. However, if you’re unsure of how to incorporate music and movement play with your babies, it could be beneficial for you to watch those videos a couple times yourself, as they include good songs to learn, and some tips on things like rhythm, and bouncing babies to feel a beat.

Musik at Home – In Our Home

My kids love this program. Especially my 2-year-old. Every time I close a video, he exclaims “More! More!” – and he doesn’t ever last through a full 15-minute children’s show. The 4-year-old really loves the echoing and the movement portions, which he says are similar to dance class. Even my older two (ages 7 and 8) are enjoying it, though they’re not quite as enthusiastic about it as the younger ones.

If you’re looking for a simple, gentle introduction to music for early elementary or preschool children, I recommend looking into Musik at Home. Membership is $15.99/month, and there is a free trial available. You can also read more about this program from other Review Crew families.
